In this workshop, Kristen will take you through the fundamentals of the sketched portrait. Using her classical training, she will instruct students on the basics of measurement/proportion, as well as value, form, and mark making, to achieve optimal likeness in a short amount of time.

Medium to large drawing pad

Drawing board

Vine charcoal

charcoal sticks 

medium and hard charcoal pencil. 

*Optional: Black Pan pastel powder with a soft tip palette knife 

A smooth painting surface/panel. (I work with gessoed aluminum dibond panels, but Ampersand boards or even gessoed wood panel works fine)

A variety of brushes for both loose work and detail, mostly flats and some rounds. (I love Rosemary & Co’s eclipse brushes, but you can use any comparable alternatives.)

Some shop towels or rags 

Odorless mineral spirits 

Linseed oil 

Ivory black, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Manganese Violet, Transparent Oxide Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Scarlet, Cadmium Orange, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Flake White or Titanium White, Viridian Green

*I like to use Old Holland, Michael Harding or Rembrandt paint brands, however, it is not required to purchase these brands

About Kristen Yann


Kristen Yann is a classical representational oil painter and former resident artist of East Oaks Studio. Born and raised in a rural town just north of Tampa, Kristen spent much of her childhood inspired by nature and the quiet beauty around her. In 2018, Kristen received a BFA from Florida State University, specializing in painting and drawing. Currently, Kristen is a full-time artist, working in subjects from portrait and figure, to landscape and still life, each representing a still and contemplative quality. Kristen’s work has honored her notable recognition with organizations such as The Portrait Society of America. Her work can be found at Collins Galleries in Cape Cod and Sugarlift Gallery in New York City along with public and private collections.
